As we close out 2024, it’s worth reflecting on a year that showcased the tech industry’s highs and lows. Here’s a quick recap of what I thought were the biggest stories that shaped the year:

🌟 𝗔𝗜 𝗧𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗻
AI continued to be the driving force dominating the tech landscape, with NVIDIA cementing its dominance as the leader in AI hardware. Meanwhile, Intel stumbled, marking a stark contrast in fortunes while Microsoft recalled Recall.

🔒 𝗖𝘆𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀
The CrowdStrike outage and the Salt Typhoon hack exposed vulnerabilities in global digital infrastructure. Adding to this, the National Public Data breach reminded us all of the critical importance of securing sensitive data.

📉📈 𝗔 𝗪𝗼𝗯𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆
Mass layoffs by major tech players at the start of the year and the controversial “Back to the Office” mandates disrupted work culture, left ripples across the industry.

🤖✨ 𝗛𝘆𝗽𝗲 𝘃𝘀. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆
Touted as the year for augmented reality, metaverse advancements, and wearables, 2024 largely fell short of these promises, echoing a similar sentiment from 2023.

🔬 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗺 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘀
Theoretical discussions began to transform into practical applications, marking a significant step forward for quantum technologies.

♻️ 𝗦𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗧𝗶𝗻𝘆 𝗛𝗼𝗽𝗲
One bright spot: innovation in carbon-capturing microbes, showcasing how technology can play a vital role in combating climate change. I only wish there is more investment in this space.

🔄 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗦𝗵𝘂𝗳𝗳𝗹𝗲
Twitter was acquired by Musk while BlueSky started reaching critical mass in Brazil, Canada, US UK and China.

💼 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗠𝗼𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗶𝗴 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀
• The EU flexed its regulatory muscles, slapping Apple with a $2.01 billion fine.
• Bitcoin soared to an all-time high, but NFTs all but disappeared from mainstream discussions.
• Oh, and we even used chopsticks to pick up rockets with Falcon 9 —a surreal testament to innovation.

💡 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱
2024 showcased the tech industry’s dual nature: groundbreaking innovation alongside its share of challenges. As we step into 2025, let’s keep pushing for a future where tech solves problems, empowers people, and drives sustainability.
